Watching last nights game I was reminded of two events in the career of Tom Brady, aka GOAT.
1.) In the ESPN 30 for 30 Documentary, after watching Brady perform in his first exhibition game in 2000 against the 49ers, Belichick commented they had picked the right guy. In the 200 draft, the 49ers had selected Giovanni Carmazzi with a 3rd round pick and Tim Rattay with a 7th round pick. Belichick had lucked out Brady’s hometown team passed on the San Mateo product. More importantly, the Patriots made the right choice in selecting Brady in the 6th round as opposed to Rattay whom they had considered.
Small sample size, but the Browns must be feeling they picked the right guy in Mayfield with the first pick. He electrified the stadium and his teammates last night. Darnold may end up being the better player time will tell, but I doubt he could bring the same passion to Cleveland as Mayfield. Baker’s leadership is off the charts.
As for the eye ball test, Mayfield seemed more poised with better accuracy and mechanics than Darnold. Sam has a noticeable hitch in his motion. May mean nothing, but if you are running a West Coast offense which the Jets are that hitch may impact the quickness in getting the ball out impacting the timing of the offense.
2.) Brady’s start to his career began with Mo Lewis of the Jets injuring Drew Bledsoe. Mayfield began his journey late in the second quarter when the Jets injured Tyrod Taylor….Can lightning strike twice? Browns fans are hoping.
Nice to see the Browns win, its been a long time coming
