2021 – AFC East QBs

Have you missed football?  We are here to get you through the off-season with the kick-off of to our draft coverage.  We will have our annual Draft Podcast / Baseball Pre-Season Picks next month but, in the mean,-time we will have daily post on the upcoming draft.  Just our random thoughts.

We are going to start our 2021 Draft Coverage with a look at each teams QB situation heading into Free Agency and the Draft starting with the AFC East:

Buffalo Bills:

Buffalo is in the best shape in the AFC season heading into 2021 and potentially for the foreseeable future.  The Bills struck pay dirt with Josh Allen.  Scouts knew he had a big-time arm and athleticism, but there were questions about his accuracy.  What was overlooked was the accuracy issues were a product of a lack of protection from the offensive line and lack of playmakers his last year with Wyoming.  A QB can have all the accuracy in the world but as we saw with Mahomes in the Super Bowl if a QB does not have time to throw there will be missed throws.

The question for the Bills this off season is who backs-up Allen?  Do they re-sign Barkley, go with Fromm or sign a Free Agent?  I can not see them going with Fromm with his lack of experience.  As Barkley knows the system, I look for the Bills to re-sign Barkely and give Fromm another year to determine if he is the answer to back-up Allen.

Miami Dolphins:

The Dolphins believe they have found the long-term answer at Coach after the 3 years of mediocrity under Adam Gase.  Now the question is, is Tua the long term answer at QB?  The Dolphins have the 3rd pick in the draft thanks to the Texans, they could go QB (Wilson or Fields), but are they any better than Tua?  Tua has only played a few games, so it seems unlikely the Dolphins would give up one question mark in Tua for a question mark in Wilson or Fields.  Look for the Dolphins to swing for the fences and try to acquire Deshaun Watson.  Failing that, the Dolphins will probably stay put and build around Tua

New England Patriots:

After 20 years of stability at QB with the greatest QB in the history of the National Football League, the Patriots find themselves in a very Jets situation.  Can they find a franchise QB?  The speculation surrounding the Patriots is whether they sign Mariota or make a move in the draft to nab Mac Jones.  Guessing the Patriots will go the draft route after last years experiment with Cam Newton.

Belichick may go to the formula that won his first Super Bowl in 2001; Defense, stout running attack and short conservative passing game.  With several defensive stars returning after opting out last year because of COVID, look for the Patriots to have a top 5 defense and return to the playoffs.  Belichick is after all the GOAT.

New York Jets:

The Jets have been searching for a franchise QB since Joe Willie Namath ended his Jets career in 1976.  They thought they found their guy in 2018 when they selected Sam Darnold with the 3rd pick in the draft, but they have failed Sam with horrific coaching and lack of talent on both sides of the ball.  So ,the Jets with the second pick have a cross roads decision, do they stay with Sam and trade the second round pick for a boatload of additional picks or trade Darnold and draft Zach Wilson.  This being the Jets whatever they decide will not work out.
